Some Disney inspiration
Before I start my story, let me tell you that I’m a huge, huge fan of Disney! One of my favourite Disney magical tales will be “The Princess and The Frog”. On 2009 Disney created this old fairytale with a modern twist in the story.
However my highlight is neither about the prince nor the princess. It’s about the thousands of tiny bugs with twinkling lights that the prince and princess come across in the movie.
YES! I am talking about ‘RAY’, a sweet lightning bug that guided them throughout the dark mangrove forest.
Well let me tell you a secret, you can also be Prince Naveen or Princess Tiana going on an adventure through a dark magical mangrove river guided by thousands of fireflies right here in MALAYSIA!
Kelip Kelip at Kuala Selangor
Kuala Selangor is a hidden gem that can be reached within 40 to 60 minutes of driving from Kuala Lumpur. It is the house of enchanting Kelip Kelip dancing around you in the pitch black mangrove river. Kelip kelip in bahasa is also known as fireflies. Just like the movie you will also enter a stunning dreamlike scene with hundreds of twinkling lights dancing and flying around you.
All you have to do is just drive up to Firefly Park Resort Kuala Selangor to experience this magical adventure. Once you reached the park you will have to purchase your tickets to board on a Sampan (small fisherman boat) that will sail you for about 30 to 45 minutes journey through the dark mangrove forest. Accompanied by the moon and stars above you, you will be taken through a magnificent journey without any lights around you. You are also not allowed to bring any torch lights or camera lights along the journey.
Fireflies are tiny insects with a spark of light at the butt that shines brightly at night to attract the female bugs. They are sensitive to lights and usually come out at night and can be mostly found in mangrove areas.
Do not use your camera with flash as the flash can kill the bugs! I repeat K.I.L.L the cute bugs!
A trip along the river will bring you through the fireflies’ habitat that will definitely take your breath away. All the tiny fireflies dancing and twirling around you in a rhythmic flashing just like being under a huge Christmas tree! If you are a fan of nature this is a sight you wouldn’t want to miss as fireflies are one of the rarest creature to be found. And you are lucky as Malaysia is blessed with this mangrove river that is just within 40 to 60 minutes away from Kuala Lumpur!
