Yes I’m currently in the process of renewing it till 2021, but if I cancel my student pass, wouldn’t it be illegal for me to stay in Malaysia since my student pass is cancelled??

If you are transferring from one university to another, you can remain in Malaysia. However, if the Immigration Department requests for an exit stamp you will be required to exit the country.
